Evaluation: QTS Standards

Helen and Pupils at work

The key criteria for the assessment of trainee teachers as they progress are the Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). In all teacher education courses trainees and mentors become immersed in the various expectations that are expressed by theses criteria. While much of the point when offering trainees an alternative setting other than school as part of their training is to take them BEYOND simply meeting the Standards, it seemed a useful exercise to 'map' the training opportunities and their likely outcomes to the QTS standards. The dialogue heard here (pdf transcription available) is in response to the following questions:

To the trainees. . . Throughout your training, much of your energy focuses on achieving QTS. Could you tell us if you think you have moved towards achieving particular standards during the placement?

To the teachers & ITE providers. . . Has participating in this project changed your perception of how standards can be met? If so can you tell us how?

To the museum educators. . . How has the development of your personal understanding of the scope and meaning of the QTS standards helped you think about your own day-to-day practice?
